International audienceThis article deals with the problem of religious remarriage in early 19th century France. Since 1792, a law established civil marriage and legalization of divorce. The unprecedented coexistence of civil and religious marriages during the revolutionary period gave birth to new situations. Meanwhile, the diocesan courts, competent in matrimonial matters, were not functioning anymore. While Cardinal Caprara was the papal legate a latere in France between 1801 and 1808, he received thousands of letters from clergymen and lay people who explained to him their matrimonial issues.This study is based on 50 petitions written by lay people, already married at least once, civilly and/or religiously, and wishing to obtain the reli...
